"The virtue of a camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking."

Slice of Life

This week's photo challenge from I Heart Faces is "Slice of Life"... the image could be from a session with another family or a shot of your own family, but there had to be at least one human face showing in the shot. The idea is that the image would be more of a "lifestyle" or "photojournalistic" shot and capture a moment of real life.

The image I chose was actually taken just a few days ago. I recently posted an entry on my blog with some maternity shots from the anticipated arrival of a new baby in the family in this entry. Well, a few days ago, he arrived to the welcoming arms of his loving parents and big sister, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. This image was impromptu, taken from across the hospital room, as one of the little girls in the family gave her new little cousin a soft kiss when he was about 2 hours old. I didn't crop it, and just did a quick conversion to a classic black and white with no other editing or corrections, which, in the proud daddy's words, "makes time stand still." And every time I look at it, I feel tears well up... the sweetness of the uninhibited, genuine love given by a small child... the gentleness of a newborn... the tenderness of the first few hours of life...
